Pottery instead of Poetry

For the past ten years I have concentrated on poetry and photography with a little painting thrown in for good measure. As a photographer, my work combines photography with pieces painted and layered into contemplative digital collages. Building on this process of adding colour and layering textures, I have discovered the joy of creating something new through the malleable material of clay.

For the month of April, I am participating in an exhibition in Canmore called Firing the Bow. All the pieces aer hand built and strive to capture organic, earthy design. My clay work is inspired by the wabi-sabi aesthetic of finding beauty in imperfection, celebrating the unconventional, and embracing rustic and natural elements. I find contentment in creating the simple and modest rather than luxurious perfection. The wabi-sabi philosophy recognizes that all things are fleeting and aging is natural and beautiful.

Key to the pieces included in this show are the surface treatments applied that react during firing. I have included shards of stained glass materials or glazes that are bursting with bits of “gems”. The surfaces are textural and painterly with inspiration drawn from the edges of the Bow River.

Seems like the year has disappeared... How did that happen? Well I took up pottery and that explains it all. Check out my new creations. So much fun, and yet so zen.

Let's take a look at the my endeavours from January.
  1. Working through the book "Art Before Breakfast" - total fail. I only made it one week before I concluded I don't like drawing for the sake of drawing.
  2. I got a bit further with the "Calm" app program for New Year Reset: Just One Step".  Lasted until the middle of January before I stopped being calm..
  3. The Photography group has been going great though - success!!! I have completed all the homework and have managed to post one photo per day since January 1st. However, I have noticed that I am shooting a lot of B&W. See some samples below. As I reflected on this observation, I decided that I need to add more colour into my work. Which brings me to my latest project...
  4. "The Profundity of Colour X" is a new collaboration of artists, poets, creatives that I kicked off in February. Our first colour is PURPLE. Stay tuned for some results in the next blog.
